Re: STEAM Magnet Transition Frequently Asked Questions

Hello, Centennial Families,

This communication is intended to clear up any confusion about our school’s transition to a STEAM magnet in 2022. Making a transition like this requires several steps. Some are significant, while others are formalities that have no impact on students. Nevertheless, the steps are necessary to successfully transform our school.

Here are some questions that have arisen.

Will our school have to close?

Technically, this is true. But the “closure” will have no impact on students or the normal campus schedule. In order to make the transition to a STEAM magnet, our school will temporarily close at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, and reopen in time for the start of the 2022-2023 school year. The closing does not involve any renovations or other physical changes. So the closing of Centennial Elementary School will occur “on paper” and will not affect the operation of the campus.

Will parents have to apply to have their student remain at the school?

Parents who wish for their child to remain at Centennial Elementary can make their wishes known by applying via School Choice. They will have “preferred” status and should have every expectation of having their student remain at the school.

Why is a rezoning necessary?

Because magnet schools do not have traditional zones and attract students from around the district, the school boundaries will have to be redrawn. Nearby attendance zones expanding to include the current Centennial Elementary School attendance zone.

Will the current teachers lose their jobs?

No one will lose their job as a result of the transition to a STEAM magnet. However, there will be some staff changes as a result of the transition to a STEAM magnet. The district has asked teachers to declare whether they wish to remain at the school. Many teachers have expressed interest and enthusiasm in remaining, and we expect most of them will remain. A smaller number have opted to pursue a teaching position in other schools. Those who wish to transfer to a more traditional position will be permitted to do so.

When will the changes take place?

Full implementation will occur at the start of the 2022-2023 school year. The remainder of this school year and the 2021-2022 school year will be devoted to preparing for the transition. It will involve identifying staff, providing the professional development needed to make the STEAM magnet school a success, and working through the rezoning process. Once again, Centennial Elementary will become a STEAM magnet in 2022-2023 school year.

Sincerely,
